3 Reasons Superman Is Just a Great Superhero Movie and Not a Political One
Wednesday, July 9, 2025Clark Kent is an ace reporter with a knack for scoops and a habit of landing major interviews — including one with Superman.Of course, it helps that Clark is Superman.By day, he works at The Daily Planet, a newspaper in Metropolis that regularly grapples with crime -- some of it local, some of it intergalactic. But when he's not chasing headlines, Clark dons his blue tights and red cape to confront those very threats.Superman has been a public figure for three years -- long enough to become a global icon and to fall for a fellow top-tier reporter, Lois Lane. Lois knows his secret identity, though she's beginning to question whether a human-alien relationship can truly endure. Now, though, Superman's very presence on Earth is being called into question. That's because business mogul Lex Luthor of the well-respected LuthorCorp claims to have uncovered a message from Superman's birth parents -- one that supposedly says his true mission isn't to save the planet, but to rule over it and to destroy anyone who gets in his way. The message even encourages him to marry multiple wives. In an instant, the once-trusted relationship between Superman and the public is spoiled -- right at the time a hero is needed. It seems one of America's top allies, Boravia, is at war. Even worse: The world is being threatened by a cataclysmic event that could end all life. Will Superman ever win back the world's trust? It's all part of the new film Superman (2025), the 11th theatrical film since 1978 focusing on the Man of Steel -- but the first in a new reboot directed by James Gunn.Of course, the leadup to the film has been embroiled by a mini-controversy about the film's supposed political overtones. Here, though, are three reasons why the headlines are all wrong.Photo Credit: ©DC
