What is the Outer Darkness in the Bible? Is it hell?

There are three passages in Scripture which refer to the outer darkness (Matthew 8:12; Matthew 22:13; Matthew 25:30) and most people believe these refer to hell. But they do not. The outer darkness in Matthew is NOT a reference to hell, but is instead a way of describing the profound shame and regret that some Christians will experience when Jesus returns physically to this earth.
